These accelerating slow phases are always towards the neutral zone (Dell'Osso & Daroff, 1975; Dell'Osso, Flynn, & Daroff, 1974). The primary subsystem instability in INS is hypothesized to lie in the normally underdamped smooth pursuit system; vestibular dysfunction (imbalance) may also be present and would account for the less-prevalent linear waveforms seen in some patients. The mechanism of oscillopsia and its suppression.

We studied the mechanisms of oscillopsia suppression in subjects with infantile nystagmus syndrome, fusion maldevelopment nystagmus syndrome, and acquired nystagmus (AN). Hypothetical possibilities for perceptual stability were the following: (1) epochs of clear and stable vision during foveation periods of nystagmus waveforms; (2) cancellation by efference copy of motor output; (3) a combinati...

Biologically relevant models of infantile nystagmus syndrome: the requirement for behavioral ocular motor system models.

Infantile nystagmus syndrome (INS) is a combination of several types of nystagmus, each representing dysfunction in one subsystem of the ocular motor system (OMS) and having characteristic waveforms. Eye-movement recordings are the only certain way to identify IN and differentiate it from other types. The waveform classification scheme in use for 30 years is both accurate, inclusive, and sugges...

Classification of infantile nystagmus waveforms

Classification of infantile nystagmus waveforms is an important problem because the characteristic waveforms can be used to distinguish between infantile and acquired nystagmus. A clear description of the nystagmus is also a necessary first stage in understanding its origin. Currently infantile nystagmus waveforms are classified into at least 12 different types. In this study we analyse a datab...

Individual larvae of the zebrafish mutant belladonna display multiple infantile nystagmus-like waveforms that are influenced by viewing conditions.

PURPOSE Infantile nystagmus syndrome (INS) is characterized by involuntary eye oscillations that can assume different waveforms. Previous attempts to uncover reasons for the presence of several nystagmus waveforms have not led to a general consensus in the community. Recently, we characterized the belladonna (bel) zebrafish mutant strain, in which INS-like ocular motor abnormalities are caused ...

Effects of topical brinzolamide on infantile nystagmus syndrome waveforms: eyedrops for nystagmus.

BACKGROUND Recent advances in infantile nystagmus syndrome (INS) surgery have uncovered the therapeutic importance of proprioception. In this report, we test the hypothesis that the topical carbonic anhydrase inhibitor (CAI) brinzolamide (Azopt) has beneficial effects on measures of nystagmus foveation quality in a subject with INS. METHODS Eye movement data were taken, using a high-speed dig...
